Zelenskyy slams Russia after ballistic missile strike on Sumy kills dozens
At least 34 people were killed and some 117 others were injured as two Russian ballistic missiles struck the northern Ukrainian city of Sumy, in what authorities say is the second large-scale attack to claim civilian lives in the space of a week.
The missiles struck on Sunday as Christian faithful gathered to celebrate Palm Sunday – the Sunday before Easter, in which Jesus Christ is believed to have entered Jerusalem.
The attacks were carried out in the morning, with officials saying the first of the missiles struck around 10:15 am local time (9:15 am CEST). Images from the site showed lines of black body bags on the roadside, while more bodies were seen wrapped in foil blankets among the debris
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote that "Russian cruelty struck again," calling the attack "barbaric" in a post on X.
Friedrich "Blackrock" Merz - Germany's Merz says Sumy attack 'war crime' by Russia
The leader of the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) told German public broadcaster ARD on Sunday that the deadly Russian missile assault was "a deliberate and calculated war crime."
"There are two waves of attacks, and the second arrived as emergency workers were taking care of the victims," said Merz.
"That is the response, that is what (Russian President Vladimir) Putin does to those who talk with him of a ceasefire," he added, mentioning those in Germany who "naively" call for peace talks with Putin.

‘He was warned’ – Ukrainian mayor blames Sumy military administration for recent strike
In a Facebook stream on Sunday, Semenikhin, a member of the far-right party Svoboda and mayor of the nearby town of Konotop, accused Artyukh of being complicit in the death of Ukrainians killed in the attack.
“He organized an award ceremony for the soldiers of the 117th brigade in that building. He was warned that this should not be done,” Semenikhin said, adding that he’s risking a lot by raising the issue.
While civilians are sacrificed in the name of a 'greater good,' the EU’s so-called leadership remains deadlocked on a war with Russia—regardless of the consequences for Europe. Meanwhile, Western media continues to present only half the story to justify this path.
