À l’Union Européenne, merci beaucoup
Politics May 20, 2025
After fears that Romania was killing democracy in Europe by allowing people to vote for whomever they deemed fit to lead them, democracy has now been restored once and for all in this Eastern European country—conveniently home to major NATO bases and situated close to Russia, against whom the EU is fighting an indirect war via Ukraine. You get the gist.
The results are as following:
First round of voting May 4, 2025:
- George Simion 40.96%
- Nicușor Dan 20.99%
Second round of voting May 18, 2025:
- George Simion 46.40%
- Nicușor Dan 53.60%
Hmm... interesting how [George] Simion hardly gathered any new votes, while Nicușor [Dan] jumped by +155% just like that.
Nicușor Dan, the Mayor of Bucharest—who was reportedly pushed to run (according to the Romanian press)—is now framed as "the candidate who actually cares about Romanian security and prosperity."
George Simion, on the other hand, is painted as far-right, a Trump supporter, anti-(support for the) war in Ukraine, Eurosceptic, anti-NATO, and anti-anything else.
So, democracy was "restored" once again—by force—in Romania. Macron didn’t even wait for the dust to settle before publicly congratulating Nicușor Dan on X.
'Despite numerous attempts at manipulation, the Romanian people chose democracy, the rule of law, and the European Union tonight' Macron wrote on Sunday evening on X
Pavel Durov, head of Telegram, also had something to say:
The head of Telegram has accused France of attempting to influence the Romanian presidential election. The French secret service and Ministry of Foreign Affairs have firmly denied the claims.
"I categorically refused. Telegram will not restrict the freedoms of Romanian users or block their political channels. You cannot "defend democracy" by destroying democracy. You cannot "fight election interference" by interfering in elections yourself. You either have freedom of speech and fair elections, or you don't. And the Romanian people deserve both."
But, as usual, you can just blame everything on Russian interference.
Meanwhile, the ever-virtuous EU has a few minor problems on its hands: rampant inflation, de-industrialization and the systematic destruction of Germany’s economy, uncontrolled immigration, a fanatical green agenda driving the cost of living ever higher, financing a lost war in Ukraine, and, of course, wet dreams about starting a direct military confrontation with Russia.
We’d add Ursula von der Leyen to this list, but we hear she’s busy these days with some unfinished Pfizer-Corona-vaccine (big) business.
