Protest against Geert Wilders in Amsterdam

Is a protest against democracy

 Politics   December 3, 2023

As we find out from nltimes.nl,

About a hundred people gathered on Dam Square in Amsterdam to protest against PVV leader and election winner Geert Wilders. Under the slogan "Not my prime minister", the demonstrators expressed their support for religious freedom, human rights, climate justice, international solidarity, and democracy.

The speeches are held from a podium to which a banner with the slogan "One country for all" is attached. People carry signs with texts such as "For religious freedom", "Racism sucks" and "Give no room for racism".

"Not my prime minister."

Well, you have to suck it up, buttercup, since this is exactly how democracy is supposed to work! Wilders is the winner of the most recent elections here in NL, having been voted for by an important chunk of the population, although not by the majority. If you know the Dutch electoral system, you know that's quite the norm, and the political spectrum is extremely fragmented.

So, his party, PVV (Party for Freedom), won 37 of the 150 seats in parliament, or 23.6% of the vote. Of the democratic vote. The topic is far from being closed; now endless discussions about the governing coalition will ensue. But it's important to note that whether you like Wilders or hate him, the result is based on a democratic system that we all abide by.

All these snowflakes being intrigued about the result of the elections are just... snowflakes. They probably own nothing, but hey! they should be happy

The chairwoman of Comité 21 maart, Saida Derrazi, considers Wilders' ideas to be "a threat to large sections of society". In her opinion, Muslims, migrants and members of the LGBTQ+ community are very worried. "We will conclude the day of action at the Dokwerker as a symbol of resistance against fascism and the extreme right," she said.

That's bollocks, but some people like to throw big words in their sentences. Fascism? Extreme right? It's so easy to get labeled these days. But nobody seems to be noticing the obvious facts here:

  • Geert Wilders is a politician with a really long work experience, and like any good politician, he likes to be flamboyant, to make himself seen, even if touching sensitive or taboo subjects.
  • As a prime minister, he needs to follow the law. He may say things, but in the end, his actions will need to follow the process. He just cannot become a dictator in the current setup
  • The results of these elections, the rise of the extreme far right across Europe, show that something is definitely not right and demonstrate that a significant chunk of the population is thinking in different terms than what the political class, main media, and protesters want us to believe.
  • it's quite interesting that religious freedom (basically referring to Islam) comes in the same sentence with human rights and democracy.

So, if you want to protest, then wait for the next round of elections and vote.

Otherwise, stop being a drama queen and enjoy the show!
