Romanian Democracy Was Restored

By ignoring the most basic principle of it

In a shocking turn of events, the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) has completely annulled the democratic elections in the country. This decision follows an earlier announcement via a press release that the Court had unanimously decided to recount all ballots from the first round of the presidential elections, including both valid votes and nullified ones. However, the recount did not yield the expected results, leading to a complete disruption of the democratic process.

As anticipated, the reactions have been overwhelmingly negative. Here is Călin Georgescu's reaction:

"Dear friends, we are in the Christmas fast and today is St. Nicholas Day. On this day the Romanian state has taken democracy and trampled it under foot. Today's CCR ruling is more than a legal controversy. It is basically a formalised coup d'état,” said Georgescu who won the first round of the presidential race on 24 November.

He continued saying “The rule of law is in an induced coma and justice, subordinated to political orders, has practically lost its essence, it is no longer justice, it is at the behest. In such a state we are no longer talking about justice, we are practically talking about a simulacrum that betrays the principles of democracy"

Even the second-place candidate, Elena Lasconi, has been vocal about this decision:

Lasconi said “Today is the moment when the Romanian state has trampled on democracy! God, the Romanian people, the truth and the law will prevail and find those guilty of destroying our democracy.”

"I strongly condemn what happened today! I think they destroyed everything we've worked hard to achieve in the last 35 years! Today they destroyed 35 years of hard work,” said Lasconi referring to the 1989 revolution which brought an end to communist rule in Romania

Following the first round of elections, a major controversy erupted around the leading candidate, Călin Georgescu. He has been labeled as an extremist right-wing politician, accused of using TikTok fraudulently, and is alleged to have deep connections with NATO’s arch-enemy, Russia.

Călin Georgescu has indeed openly criticized Bucharest’s role in the Ukraine conflict, accusing NATO and the EU of neglecting Romania’s interests. He has also alleged that American defense contractors are exploiting the war for profit.

However, his position differs significantly from the one aggressively promoted by the mainstream media narrative.

Prioritizing national interests over those of NATO or the EU is not something the West can easily accept.

Of course, Russian interference was cited as a factor in this decision (how else?), but so far, no clear evidence has been provided. Everything has been classified as top-secret, and Romanians are expected to accept what they are told without question.

Not even the TikTok story doesn't hold up too well. From a TruthAndNeutralityAlliance Telegram channel, we find out about an interesting graph:

The Constitutional Court and a slew of politicians in and outside of Romania, including many top EU officials have rallied behind the Constitutional Court's decision and accused Călin Georgescu that he manipulated people on TikTok and got more popular than he deserved.

Data shows that it is simply not true. Data collected by the Expert Forum NGO who was one of the first and loudest accusers of ”digital manipulation” shows that Călin Georgescu came in 4th in terms of views on TikTok. The first one was George Simion, who placed 4th in the presidential elections. He had a combined 396 million views on TikTok.

Then there is Călin Georgescu himself with 145 million views and he got 1st place.

In a previous article, we speculated whether another metaphorical Euromaidan could occur in Romania.

It seems that it was entirely possible.
