The Netherlands is passing through some interesting times now, when the government is simulating something like a pandemic control for a pandemic that is already gone for months now, but with a hand still on the stick, even if reality hardly matches what they're doing anymore.
The new Health Minister, Ernst Kuipers, said on Tuesday that:
the Cabinet wants to open up society as much as possible, while simultaneously keeping the pandemic under control to some extent,
Open up society is by allowing restaurants, cafes, theaters and other previously closed institutions to do business again basically. But, since they have to pretend they're doing something against the pandemic, they're allowing these activities to take place only between 05.00am and 10.00pm. Because... reasons. And of course, it's not like fully opened, but with again restrictions in place. Which leads us to Corona passes.
All this called opening is related to a valid Corona certificate that every person should have, if they want of course, to pretend they live again a normal life. The flavor of the certificate was debatable, and Rutte really wanted to go 2G, to severely punish the un-vaccinated and the not-so-up-to-date (already) vaccinated. There is some opposition to that crazy idea, at least for now.
Support for 2G has eroded recently, also after a study by TU Delft which shows that the effects of 2G is very limited in the current situation with the Omicron variant.
But it is clear that the Cabinet wants to keep 2G in its toolbox as a resource, something which Prime Minister Mark Rutte also said during a recent debate on coronavirus measures. "Let's not throw it away,” he said to the critical parliamentarians.
This 2G option, will be obviously used, when not enough people will queue anymore for the boosters. Mark my words.

The number of infections is now so large, and is growing so fast, that there is a very high chance that one “will encounter someone who is carrying the virus in daily contact.”
Kuipers admitting, forced by reality, that the passes don't quite matter (since vaccines are not preventing transmission of the virus, but we still count those as the main reasons for the passes in the first place):
He acknowledged that an access pass does not guarantee the prevention of infections, but that it only has "a dampening effect" on the number of infections.
Since the unvaccinated are still outside this opening, it's logical that the expected increased in infections shall be attributed to the fully vaccinated people. From 1 Feb, with a fluid definition.
And even euronews.net is celebrating this willingness of the Eu countries to end quarantine. Well, sort of, since it's applicable only to the Corona passes.
Clément Beaune, the Secretary of State for European Affairs of France, said that the idea is to focus on people... being important to have more restrictions for people who are unvaccinated.
Maybe Clément should be eager to explain why we're hitting record of infections when a huge chunk of the population is vaccinated and why the unvaccinated are to be blamed for it?
And even with a right answer (which we'll never have), keep in mind that the government is intentionally running after the wrong rabbit here. We're talking about the end of the world, and we're forced to look into the number of infections. But pay attention and keep on looking at them! The details matter.
The Netherlands had record of infections last week (15-21.01), with more than 52.000 positive tests average per day. From which, only 11 people got in ICU. That is 0.000211% for this high infectious virus, that demands discrimination and lockdowns, and fear inducing news.
So, are the Covid passed necessary with society reopening? A hard NO. Not even one anti-corona measure makes sense anymore.
