Three children, forever 12

Tragedy strikes again and the system still sleeps

A Fatal School Cycling Trip: When Justice Fails

A reckless driver. Three children killed. A school principal dead. At least three other children severely injured. Families destroyed in a fraction of a second.

Who Is the Killer?

Reinaldas J., born in Lithuania, 20 years old.

He was driving at 130 km/h in a bend with a recommended speed of 70 km/h — possibly even faster. He appeared to ignore mechanical issues with his car, but the car was not the problem in this tragic event.

He was observed at least 17 times speeding in the 7 days before the accident. Moreover, as a true vlogger, he recorded himself driving at excessive speed several times. His THC level was under the legal limit, but that raises more questions.

So it is safe to affirm that the accident was caused by a stupid, reckless driver who deserves the maximum punishment under the law.

How Do Dutch Laws Treat This Sort of Behaviour?

A single conviction for driving in a manner which causes the death of another is punishable by up to three years in prison, but this period can be doubled should prosecutors prove a suspect of driving recklessly.

So, a maximum of three years. You get behind the wheel, take someone's life, and walk away with a sentence of no more than three years in prison?

And as if that weren't devastating enough, the families were then hit with an even more shocking revelation:

The court said defendants must be able to await trial in freedom if the risk to society remains low. He was arrested as a 19-year-old, and held for 14 days amid the initial phase of the investigation, and judges remanded him into custody for 30 days at his arraignment. This was then extended by 60 more days in July, which expires with his expected release on Thursday.

Low? It seems the risk was anything but low. This reckless behavior was repeated over and over again, and it was only the dark fate of those children that finally brought him, at least for a brief moment, into the light of justice.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time — and it certainly won't be the last — that the law has failed to deliver justice.

It's difficult to read. You can feel the anger and despair of the victims' families, betrayed by a system that was supposed to protect them and deliver justice.

"She was a little ray of sunshine. Truly a real teenager. She would have turned 13 next month."

All three of the children were very close friends.

"She is now with Damian and Olivia forever, while we all have to live with this grief. Three children, forever 12."

Another Case, Another Failure

One of the many: Prosecutors seek five years for driver accused of killing 4-year-old in Maastricht crash. Again, the driver was drunk and speeding in a 50 km/h zone.

May they rest in peace.
