How much for a taken life?

2.5 years

On 10th March 2023, on the highway A59 near Sprang-Capelle, at about 9:15 p.m, a tragic accident took place.

Thomas de G., having blood alcohol level 3 times more than the legal limit and recklessly driving with more than 225km/h, while filming himself, caused an accident that involved four cars and a truck.

The truly tragic part: a whole family (two kids, 10 and 13 and their parents) died in a burning car. You can read more about this here and here.

Thomas de G. escaped with minor injuries.

"The court also stated that his phone contained many more videos showing him committing serious traffic violations. He had also previously been convicted of driving under the influence."

"...and had also lost his driver's license before... for a drink driving offense."

... which begs the question, who allowed De G. to have a driving license again, giving his mental issues (read below)?

He gets for this 10 years in prison (and compulsory psychiatric treatment). Initially the Public Prosecutor was asking for 7(!).

"The lawyer also highlighted mitigating circumstances, including De G.'s mental trauma and loss of a family member. His lawyer advocated therefore for the classification of the incident as reckless driving rather than manslaughter."

This is the current level of justice, here in the Netherlands.
